Finding Russell Brook Falls
Incredible scenic beauty awaited to be discovered in each direction of the compass when starting out at the Upper Delaware Inn, in Hancock, NY. Our goal in the coming months will be to highlight the many recreational activities that can be easily enjoyed in the morning or afternoon when visiting our area.
About a thirty-minute drive east from Hancock and the Upper Delaware Inn, Russell Brook Falls is one of the most scenic falls in the western Catskills. Made of a double cascade, the upper falls drops about twenty feet and the lover falls another thirty. Located in the Cherry Ridge Wild Forest, the area also has a few primitive campsites along the dirt access road.
To reach Russell Brook Falls from Hancock, take Rt. 17 to the Roscoe exit. Turn left on Main Street, then turn left again onto Rockland Hwy (Rt. 217.) Drive 2.5 miles and take a left onto Morton Hill Rd. Drive up the mountain another 2.5 miles and take a left on Russel Brook Rd. Parking for the falls is at the bottom of the hill.
From the parking lot, go to the wide path and take the immediate first right towards the Mudd Pond trail. You’ll cross a little footbridge and to the right is a small path alongside the stream with trails leading to the falls. Some areas are steep and you should use caution. The total walk is only a few hundred yards.
