Easiest High Peak Climbs in the Catskills

The Innkeeper's Register - Recreation

The Catskills boast 35 peaks over 3500 feet tall, offering amazing hiking opportunities throughout the region.ย  Above 3,500 feet, the forest composition shifts significantly. Balsam fir becomes much more prevalent at these higher elevations. This change in dominant tree species creates a distinct habitat zone in the upper reaches of the Catskill peaks.

The higher elevation areas provide important breeding habitat for certain bird species. Bicknell’s thrush and Blackpoll warblers establish breeding territories above 3,500 feet. These areas serve as critical habitat for these specialized mountain bird species.

The climate becomes noticeably harsher above 3,500 feet. Temperatures are generally colder year-round. Wind exposure increases significantly. Snow and ice persist longer in spring and arrive earlier in fall
